Senior Living Satisfaction Survey: Poll Finds Seniors in Assisted Living Feel Satisfied and Safe in Their Community

93% of seniors are satisfied; 99% of seniors feel safe in their community

When it comes to thinking about senior living, some may have negative ideas. Some people have a stereotype image about what the lifestyle is like. But the reality is, an overwhelming number of seniors feel satisfied and safe in their assisted living community.

Recently, The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) conducted a nationwide survey of seniors currently living in assisted living communities. The Senior Living Satisfaction Survey found that 93% of seniors feel satisfied with their community. This includes 68% who say they are “very satisfied.” The Senior Living Satisfaction Survey also found residents almost unanimously feel safe in their communities. The survey found that 99% of respondents reported that they feel safe.

“Every morning, close to a million American seniors wake up in their assisted living community. They have an active and engaging day in a safe, independent and social environment. Then go to sleep that night eager to greet a new day,” said Rick Grimes, President of the ALFA. “That fact may not make for a sensational headline, but it’s the reality of assisted living.”

The Senior Living Satisfaction Survey covered 500 seniors who live in assisted living communities. The survey found widespread satisfaction for almost every aspect of life in their communities:

By an 8-1 margin, assisted living residents also agree with the following statement:

“Assisted living communities are an excellent choice for seniors who want to live active, independent lives, but may just need a little help now and then. Assisted living communities have a professional and caring staff that provides a safe ‘home away from home’ for residents. There are ample rules and regulations in place to ensure residents remain safe and are well taken are of. Residents living in assisted living communities enjoy a healthy and high quality of life.”

“What matters most to us is what our residents think, so we went out and asked them,” continued Grimes. “And what we found confirmed what we already knew: Assisted living is absolutely the best, safest and most satisfying senior living option for seniors who cherish their independence but just need some extra help. The true story of assisted living won’t be found in sensational news reports. It’s found in the everyday stories of our residents, and the safe, happy and active lives they lead every single day.”

The Senior Living Satisfaction Survey questioned 500 residents living in assisted living communities. It  was conducted between July 15-18, 2013. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.38%. It was conducted jointly by Public Opinion Strategies and Frederick Polls.
